Hey Arsene! Look What You've Done!

Here is a comparison of Arsenal's squad in the 2005-2006 season and the current one.

There are fewer players in defence, midfield and attack, with experience clearly lacking.

I've been thinking about the need for a defensive midfielder, but having had a look at the table, I think that it's clear that the defence is more worrying!

Injuries or suspensions to any 3 of the 6 defenders at the same time leaves only 3 recognised defenders!

This is the type of situation that could end up with Diaby or Eboue playing in central defence.

2005-2006

ATTACK

Adebayor
Aliadiere
Bendtner
Bergkamp
Henry
Van Persie

2008

ATTACK

Why do you ignore the 2007/8 squad that came so close?
And probably would have done it without the season ending injuries to Rvp, Sagna and Eduardo.

Tabloid Reporter-style tosh mate.

Give me the 2008/09 squad any day. The good players in 05-06, such as Cesc, RvP, Ade and Clichy, are now world class.

I think our attack is stronger now, even without Henry and Bergkamp (who was playing barely 2 games a month by the end).

The misleading thing about this article is the fact many of the current Arsenal squad can fill a number of roles: Eboue, Djourou, Song can each play in 3 different positions.

I'm quite amused at how you threw in all those youth names in your list on the left.

If you're going to do that, then you must add Merida, Randall, Lansbury, Gibbs, Nordtveidt, Coquelin, Simpson and company on the right too. And there is some fine talent in that lot too. (Not to mention some of the talent on load too)

Aliaidiere was always injured and rarely scored
Bentely wasn't good enough and still isn't
Hoyte will never be good enough
Owusu- can't even get a game in Siberia
Lauren, Lehman, Ljunberg, Bergkamp,Poom and Gilberto were well past their best when they left.
Senderos was given his chance(s) and never took it
Larson is a good pro but never an Arsenal player
Henry wanted to go- we got a good price as he only has this season left as a top player
Reyes was a big money disappointment.
Helb is a w%*ker- We have a younger better Nasri

Flamini- has still not been replaced- Look to Diaby/Song/Denilson/Eboue to share the burden
Pires- was missed due to Rosick note's injuries

Pires and Flamini are the only losses of te above list of players you have mentioned

Will we have Diaby& Rosicky back after the international 2 week break?
I think Wenger said Diaby would be a couple of weeks and Rosicky ready in September.
That leaves just Eduardo who has been back running for the last 4 weeks.

The squad list for 2008/09 is a bit misleading because (as Gunnar commented) we have several players able to play in either defence and midfield or midfield and attack.

Wenger loves to have flexible players such as Eboue, Song, Silvestre, Walcott, Djourou, Nasri, Rosicky, Eduardo, Van Persie and Vela who can all play two or three different positions.

Based on that, it can look like we've got a bigger squad, when actually we don't.

What is really worrying to me, is how many people are now slagging Wenger. Yes, we didnt buy a defensive midfielder before the transfer window closed, but i take you back 3 years ago when Wenger brought in a certain player that nobody had heard of. In the three years that followed this player hardly played in the first team squad, then when he finally got his break, he became one of the most sought after midfielders in the world. This is why I believe Wenger insisted that it was not the be all and end all if we didn't sign a new DM, he sees things in players that others don't. Now whether this new revelation will be Denilson, Abou Diaby, Song or even Eboue, we need to get behind our boss and have the faith in him that we have had in him over the past 13 years. IN ARSENE WE TRUST - HAVE FAITH MY FELLOW GOONERS

terrible article mate. The fact we finished 4 points of the top last year compared with 05/06 where we finished some way off goes to show that this team and squad is miles better than back then and how much we've improved since then

In 2005-06, There was the small matter of the Champions League final, don't forget that.

Also, it could be argued that last season fell apart because of injuries to Eduardo and Sagna. What happens if Sagna gets injured now? Where is the cover that wasn't there last season, leading to Toure having to play right back?

I am happy that may have seen this article as rubbish, cynical and very plastic already!!!! What is wrong with someone having a policy of development and seeing the fruits of it rather than buying ready made stuff?

This is why the culture of credit card and take away food prevails in this country because there are just too many people who cannot build and take a step by step approach, they'll rather have it now!!! That is a wrong approach if you ask me and it shows a very immature approach to life in general.

I'm about to lose my job and would love the chance to get back in the game, plus I'm available, and a free agent - your squad does look a bit thin on the ground... I can help.

No point in making absurd comparisons between the squads imo but to just blindly roll out platitudes like "In Arsene we trust" is idiotic. If Wenger did not think we needed cover in midfield why did he try to sign Alonso? We weren't strong enough last season and we are weaker this - obviously. Gilberto while past his prime for the PL brought experience at every level of professional football and a calm assured presence (unlike Gallas) when on the pitch, and more importantly behind the scenes. Flamini's energy and doggedness all over the pitch will me missed and none of the players that people are suggesting can replace him look capable of doing so - Diaby is fragile and does not have a good football brain, often mis-places passes and is often out of position - Denilson has all the potential in the world but it looks at least a year too early for the lad - Song might just surprise everyone but still has it to do, so we're relying on a suprise here ... yet another Flamini-esque revelation and I'm not confident that Wenger can churn them out time after time. If he does, I'll eat my shoes, and his! We haven't addressed the issue of lack of experience at all - something Wenger himself has alluded to on numerous occasions. Silvestre? That's a very weird signing especially as I can honestly say that whenever he played against us I was HAPPY because he's such a liability, but now he's our liability. Jesus.

I say bring on the c*nts of ManU, Cheski, 'Pool, Citeh, Sp*ds and all the rest - we will have a good go at all of 'em BUT we are going to struggle to win the league, and a couple of injuries (Cesc? Sagna? Clichy? Nasri?) and we're totally fucked as far as any silverware is concerned we have a fight on to keep the CL spot this season.

Spot on Gunnar, Your observation is matched by insipidness of this article author. What is also missed by many fans is that we fail to realise that Wenger knows somewthing we dont-mainly the personalities of these players. This gives him reason to be loyal to them.

I have been supporting Arsenal all my life-long before I even saw them live-in Africa and can recall the times when we were not considered a top team. I am aware that we live in a free society but and on the same token individual oipinion is as important as that individual. For that reason many opinions aired in many articles in the last few days deserve nothing but derision.

Yes, Wenger makes mistakes like any other human but he does'nt deserve insults he's been subjected to in some blogs. Imagine how much money our beloved neighbours have shelled without getting it right. While you are at it, think of LEEDS United who played Champios against Barcelona League 5-6 years ago are now mired in League 12. Incidentally, Barcelona who are supposed to have strengthened with a tapped up Hleb got beat up by a nobody last weekend.

You are not comparing like-for-like!
You have included many youth/reserve players from 05-06 that hardly played and/or were moved on... players like Eboue, Sanderos, J. Hoyte, Clichy, Owusu, Larsson, Bentley, Walcott, Song, Bendtner...
Missing from your list of our squad today that play the exact same role are players like Gibbs, G. Hoyte, Randall, Lansbury, Merida, Coquelin, Barazite, Simpson... it evens it up somewhat... and I think the young kids we have coming up now are up a level from 05-06 in that respect...
Also, as pointed out by others, we were pretty close last year and are only really down a "decent" central midfielder... Nasri will be more productive, in my opinion, than Hleb... Walcott will be better than last year... ditto Bendtner... we have added Vela... plus Eduardo, Rosicky and Diaby are on their way back from injury.
I believe that Alex Song has the potential to fill the gap left by Flamini... and let's not forget that this time last year when Diaby was injured and Flamini started playing in CM, everyone (and I mean everyone) was saying that he wasn't good enough, he's a full back and that we were going to struggle and finish outside the Top 4.
Give Arsene a chance before you give up on him... and please get behind the boys, as we will have no chance of doing anything if the fans don't believe and suppport!
Spare a thought for our neighbours up the road who have lost £50m+ worth of striking talent and now have Darren (£16.5m?????) Bent and the next Sergei Rebrov to pin their hopes on.
COME ON YOU REDS!!!!

Well even if tha article was as such articles always seems to be a bit off...but the main concern in the article is very real...The club is beeing build down..
i must say that im deeply worried thinking of the injury prone players we have and well only youth as back up...

One thing is perfectly clear....Mr Wenger and the board of fools...have only one agenda and that is making money...

i hope RVP,Rosicky,Eduardo,Diaby,Silvestre, and a few others...will stay out of trouble (injuries)or else we will be in deep trouble.......

have a great day Gooners...

For the umpteenth time - Toure did not have to play at right-back last season, Gallas should have. Toure was already playing poorly anyway.
As for the article there was mention of where players were in their careers. The latter squad looks better to me. The former had plenty on the wrong side of the hill.

Bently, Larsson, Quincy, Aliadiere and cygan rarely if ever played. Bergkamp retired, nothing we could do about that. Eduardo has taken the place of Dennish and Henry, Silvestre has replaced Phil and Campbell. Cole is a twat and Hleb is a cunt. Of the players that left only Pires has done well. Most of those departed are now doing shit.

Our squad now has MASSIVE potential but "that" knew how to win.

Mark Kitching..... you hit the nail with that comment..... exactly, what we have different from the comparison our blogger friend made is that this time around we have several players that can play in different positions...

can u even imagine the number of possible combinations we can come up with involving these players !!!!!!!!!!!!!!? PLENTY !!!!!!!!!!!! (though am a little bit worried at the defence, we do have the combinations, but the age factor to allow them to play on the sides and run the flanks is a bit worrying.. thats only if we have 2 defenders injured at the same time)

The only comparison that bears mentioning is that the team on the left could win a championship, while the team on the right can only ever get close.
